Nurses trained in Ghana or from other countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA will need to acquire several additional qualifications before registering as a nurse. The NMC requires you to undergo a 2-part application.

Part 1 – Test of Competence (CBT)
This test determines the applicant’s knowledge and understanding of professional skills. This is in accordance with NMC’s pre-registration standards and requirements for all nurses. There are specific qualifications for the following nursing categories:

1) General
2) Learning Disabilities
3) Mental Health
4) Children

NMC’s standards help to evaluate the applicant’s professional values, decision-making capabilities, communication skills and leadership.

You can proceed to sit for the first part if you pass this assessment — the test of competence. CBT is a computer-based test, which assesses theoretical knowledge in the nursing field. The format is multiple choices, and it is carried out in centers across the globe. To book or pay for this test, you should contact Pearson Vue, which is NMC’s official test provider.

Part 2 – Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE)
The OSCE is practical-based, and conducted upon the applicant’s arrival in the UK.

Every applicant is examined on a one-to-one basis by one or more examiners. Every applicant has a different examiner and either a real or simulated patient. Candidates go through each station until they complete all the stations in their circuit.

Candidates are expected to display safe and effective practicea. Each station has a specific pass mark. The sum of pass marks is tallied to determine the applicant’s overall score for the OSCE test.

This OSCE exam can be taken in different universities throughout the UK. Once the NMC authorizes you to do this test, you’ll need to contact the university directly.

Nurses from Ghana must meet the NMC’s English language standards which can be achieved by:

Completing the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

Providing proof that your nursing programme was taught in English and no less than 50% of this course involved clinical interaction using English.

The Identification Check
For the final stage, you will undergo a face-to-face identification check at the NMC office in London. For this process, you must present original copies of all documents photocopied and sent during the application process. NMC officials will make final checks of your initial registration and take a picture for their records.

The Final Registration
After completion of the OSCE test and the ID check, you will be invited to make a final declaration and payment for registration after which you will receive your PIN verifying that you are now a fully-qualified nurse who can work full time in the UK. NMC’s online records will also reflect this.
